Frame relay is a wide area network technology in which a client connects their device to a service provider’s frame relay network. This method is a relatively cheaper way to connect networks over a WAN and only requires one access line per site as compared to other methods (such as a leased line).
Within a frame relay network, a data link connection identifier (DLCI) acts similar to an IP or mac address although the concepts slightly differ. Each end of a frame relay connection will contain a locally unique DLCI, which is typically assigned by the customer’s service provider. The DLCI provides a destination address for clients that send data over the frame relay network (also called virtual circuit).
