Students need consistency, and stability, so make sure you incorporate a sturctured system into your lessons, one of many good ideas is to start the lesson, in any type of thinking or brainstorming activity it could be a simple predection exercise about the day's lesson, just to stimulate their minds and get them going...

First of all the teacher must build trust among his/her students that he/she really, really, and really cares about the progress and future lives of his/her students. The teacher should provide class-work and homework regularly and must check them regularly. Appreciate students' struggle also. Remind them that we learn from our mistakes. It is OK to make mistakes, but learn from your mistakes and improve your performance yourself. Provide some of examples from your own life, where you had made mistake and improved yourself. Guide them nicely in a sympathetic and caring voce. They must understand that you are trying to improve their future lives. If a teacher makes his/her habit as I mentioned above, then the students would make necessary changes in their daily routine.
I've often heard people saying the "personal example" is not a way to teach others. But children, the students need an example/model, they see a teacher as a guide through knowledge and life. It is hard to be a model to them; they share somehow different values than the elders. You have to get to the bottom line of these values because there lie the strongest principles life can count on I don't know how much any longer..
