Your best work environment depends upon things you have learned already and the amount of knowledge you can achieve from that work, that work must be your passion and gives you the job satisfaction.

Everyone has a preferred way of working. Some people like the formality of processes. If that’s you, say, “I like when processes are in place so I know what steps to take.” Others may prefer a more informal work environment in which there is less structure in the way the company operates. If that’s your preferred environment, you might say you like extemporaneous meetings in hallways and business decisions made over a casual lunch.

For some people, the ideal work environment has set hours, with people arriving at9 a.m. and leaving at5 p.m. For those with family responsibilities, this may represent the ideal environment. For others, work is their life, so their ideal environment is one in which most of the other employees feel the same way. Many people like an environment where they can work remotely, while others prefer the interactions that can happen only at the office. Work-life balance is a typical interview question, so you should give it a great deal of thought because your work environment will have many implications for your long-term happiness.

There are three basic areas: field engineering and construction management; design and project management; operations.

In field engineering and construction management you will oversee and resolve construction, fabrication, and installation related issues. The tasks may involve inspection and testing of construction materials, verify and enforce specification requirements during the construction, and resolve construction problems such as unsuitable foundation soil, interferences between existing and proposed new components, and unforeseen circumstances. As you can see the field environment could vary from a swamp, frozen tundra, to a desert, or in the middle of a major metropolitan area, or in an area where you are exposed to a different culture.

Design and project management usually takes place in an office type environment. However, that environment may be in a temporary trailer, sometimes in close proximity to the site. Depending on how big the company is, you may be located in a major metropolitan area to take advantage of the communication and transportation infrastructure.

Also access to fabricators is important as you will need access to visit the fabrication shops. On occasion you will be called upon to visit the site to resolve design issues before and during construction.

In operations, you will be called upon to resolve production issues or optimize the process originally conceived during the design phase. In this case, you will probably be in a small office next to the plant, for example, a waste water treatment plant.
