simply A remote terminal unit (RTU) is a microprocessor-controlled electronic device that interfaces objects in the physical world to a distributed control system or SCADA (supervisory control and data acquisition) system by transmitting telemetry data to a master system, and by using messages from the master supervisory system to control connected objects. Another term that may be used for RTU is remote telemetry unit, the common usage term varies with the application area generally.
Remote Telemetry Units are usually transmitting data uni-directionally, i.e. telemetry or metered values towards the master station.
Remote Terminal Units are responsible for telemetry as well as to implement control functions to the station level.
remote telemerty units ,It's function is to control process equipment at the remote site, acquire data from the equipment, and transfer the data back to the central SCADA system. while remote terminal units is a microprocessor controlled electronic device which interfaces objects in the physical world to a distributed control system by transmitting telemetry data to a master system, and by using messages from the master supervisory system to control connected objects.
they have the same meaning,no difference between them
RTU” stands for “Remote Terminal Units.” They are also referred to as “Remote Telemetry Units.” An RTU is an electronic device which is controlled by a microprocessor. The main function of an RTU is to interface the SCADA to the objects present physically. “SCADA” stands for “supervisory control and data acquisition.” The interface between objects and SCADA takes place by using supervisory system messages to control all the objects connected and by transmitting to the system all the telemetry data.
Well ofcourse therez a difference between them thats y i've asked the question ;)
Please don't define whts RTU . Stick to the question...
Both are same, the difference is made due to their operational properties, and given by their manufacturers. Both can work like PLC working under SCADA or DCS. But if you are eager, then let us suppose that Terminal units are end points, whereas Telemetery are used to work as field device also. But don't be confused, it is just names denoted by their manufacturers.
DCS VS PLC
1. Single vendor Mutiple
2. Small Area /LAN Large Area/WAN
3. Many I/O Less I/O
4. Use for Monitoring Used for Controlling
The remote Telemetry Units and the remote terminal unit are the same thing, and the primary tasks of both units is control and gathering of monitored data and its transfer to a higher level control system, where they offer ability to be notified in the event of problems at one of the remote or isolated sites, ability to continuously monitor facility operation, ability to automate processes and to act remotely on devices, and ability to optimize and improve the management of distributed technical sites.
Remote Terminal Unit and Remote Telemetry Units are same things having two different names. These are rugged industrial computers that provide intelligence in the field and allows the central SCADA master to communicate with the field instruments. It is a stand alone data acquisition and control unit. It's function is to control process equipment at the remote site, acquire data from the equipment, and transfer the data back to the central SCADA system. It is used where the equipment being controlled is more remote from the Central Unit.
