A good hire is someone who;

  • Fits the culture - by this it means no major disruptions should result from an employee trying to fit within the organisation and the process should be as smooth as possible during induction and beyond.
  • Skills - the candidate must possess both hard and soft skills to be able to progress within their assigned role. Ability to do the actual job as required and beyond and the ability to relate to coworkers.
  • Commitment - commitment is directly related to engagement therefore there are expectations from both sides the employer and the employee. For a new hire that is non-negotiable because  they have to be committed and follow through otherwise they will not even make it past the probation period.
  • Work Ethics - History says a lot about any individual especially in respect of their previous jobs. Talking about spending extra hours at work from your previous job(s), were you a job hopper? Were you rehired before by the same employer? Were you promoted consistently throughout your career? what was your reason for leaving your last job? What would your boss say about you? what do your references say in your absence? and so on.
