While Project Management deals with the five important process group there must a skill in all of (in between of) them to achieve the benefit of every project - that skill makes leading everyone into the SMART goals and objectives.
project wise, the Project manager is leader of the project. you'll never find a project who has both. i think the question should be " leadership Vs Management"
management is to plan, organize and coordinate. leadership is is to inspire and motivate. both are not the same but they are necessarily linked, and complementary and must go hand in hand.
It’s the same management vs leadership debate, some would say they are synonyms, others see major differences. My view is that management (including project management) is mostly linked to planning, organising, supervising and controlling, while project leadership is the art of influencing people and motivating them to perform the purpose of the project. Both complement each other, as management cannot be done without the people following, where a charismatic leader would make sure to do so.
Managing a project infers - being aware of all the various components of the project and making sure that there is a step by step progression, a proper time line for achieving milestones, in essence ensuring that the project plan is implemented and managing the process.Preferably a hands-on approach
Project leader is the person who takes the reins/lead in a project (can be the same as person as the project manager. In my experience it is probably best that the project leader and manager is the same person).
The project leader usually initiates the time line for a project plan and ensures that all components of the project plan are suitably arranged so as to fit into the time line in order to meet the submission date/project delivery date. Proper management of the integration/collaboration of all components is key in achieving the ultimate objective of the project plan. Also key is the management of the staff responsible for the various components as a delay in any of these components can result in a loss for the company/nstitution

A project leader is a project manager, but a project manager is not necessarily a project leader.
Both managers and leaders are professionals who are tasked with planning, executing and closing a project. Both are in charge of a project team, but only project leaders inspire and motivate that team. Project leaders take the time to get to know the team, keep them in the loop and act as mentors.
Project Leadership differs from Project Management in many ways :
a) Leadership over sees the broad aspects which is setting up the budgets, over view of plans and approving the project itself : Project management goes into minute details lige detail planning, allocation of funds and resources , follow=ups on daily basis etc...
b) Mile stone setting is the job or Project Leadership whereas achieving it is the lookout of the Project management .
I think rest all are well covered in above answers.
Project Leadership can simply be put as project pace-setting. A project leader can act as advisors , they possess a highly diserable blend of technical prowess and leadership skills to driv an optimum project performance . there are types of leaders such as : autocratic, democratic ,participative, instructional , etc .
Project Management : They plan projects and they solve road-block issues and they measure performance .
A project leader must simply augment tactical skills with the ability to think and act strategically. What follows is a brief description of key project leadership competencies, juxtaposed against “standard” project management considerations.
Today's Project Managers may be the Future Project Leaders.
Any way but there is no separate positions in the project like - Project Manager & above him a Project Leader.
So the Project Manager is a whole sole authority of the project. I recommend the companies that there shall be a position above Project Manager. Recently I came across one bad experience about one Project Manager - He tried to prolong the project period & to grab the money from the sub contractors, for his own selfishness. Making the Top Management misguided, which is in Dubai.
It is not necessary that Project Manager is Project Leader OR vice versa
