What is difference between leader and manager?
In my opinion, there are two different set of skills: Leadership skills and management skills. If someone has one of those sets of skills it doesn't mean that he/she has the other set by default.
Leadership Skills: Setting Vision, Formulating Goals, Setting direction, Getting people's buy in, Inspiring others, Motivating, Persuading, Resolving conflict, Empowering, Guiding, Coaching, Mentoring, Reading people.
Management Skills: Planning, Capacity Evaluation, Utilizing resources, Improving efficiency, allocating resources, solving problems, delegating, monitoring, controlling, budgeting.
Both sets of skills are different, yet important. A good leader needs to learn how to be a good manager and a good manager needs to learn how to be a good leader.
Both are having sets of talents which are valuable to any orgnization. Such talents are complementary to each other to get things done.
Great leaders may or may not become manager & vice versaFew other differences, I feel are
Managers are appointed - leaders may or may not be appointed
Managers have employee - Leaders win followers
Managers manage team - Leaders create team
Managers rely on invention - Leaders reinvent
Managers take credit - Leaders take responsibility
Managers exercise power - Leaders develop power
– The manager administers; the leader innovates.
– The manager maintains; the leader develops.
– The manager focuses on systems and structure; the leader focuses on people.
– The manager relies on control; the leader inspires trust.
– The manager has a short-range view; the leader has a long-range perspective.
– The manager asks how and when; the leader asks what and why.
– The manager has his or her eye always on the bottom line; the leader’s eye is on the horizon.
– The manager accepts the status quo; the leader challenges it.
– The manager does things right; the leader does the right thing.
A leader would help to improve his "team" in order to improve the whole company structure and for sure his sales and revenue.
A manager will manage his "subordinates" to the current policy and target and will not seek to improve his team.
Bottom line, A leader helps and goes further in order to help his team and managers manages subordinates which he systematically does without being passionate about any improvement.
Manager only bring resources together to work efficient.Leader not only bring resources together but also teach team how to utilize those resources in more efficient way.
Leaders have vision and capacity to influence and mould people to move with them loyally and they set strategies and Goals while Managers are just executing the corporate strategies for achieveing set goals with their team - many of qualities overlap but tough times separate man from boys
A manager is a person who only needs to accopmlish his goals only not caring for his team and may his team follow him only for afraid that may cause loses.
A leader who inspires his team in team work and positive attitudes from themselves acting perfectly even he dont have eye on them.
they do his policies for him firstly and seconldy for the advantage of what they do.
Just to be precise a leader leaders or guiding his team by let them follow his footsteps in organisation while a manager managing and monitor the progress of the employees by ensuring his / her role is paid homaged by deletagating and commanding .
The difference is that leader create and develop visoin while manager handle and deliver the vision.
I hope everybody will read and understand this point !!!
We can not defferentiate between the manager and leader !
leading is one of manager's functions or advantages , so in order to be a manager you should have leadership and management skills ...etc
and in order to be only a leader then you should have leadership skills
also to add that in order to be a director , then u should have leadership , managerial and the enough experience to direct a department
What i mentioned were only part of the skills , also you have different responsibilities and tasks..
Thank you
