Different bacterial species get attached to the media and multiply by feeding on waster water biological degradable pollutants. In other words media provides a shelter to bacteria to multiply and grow on high surface area of media. In this way we have diverse species of bacteria both in MBBR sludge and media which altogether provide better reduction of BOD and bCOD.
Example: (Just for understanding)
only Activated sludge process: BOD/bCOD reduction%
Activated sludge+Kaldness media (MBBR): BOD/bCOD%
You could say that this% additional BOD/bCOD removal is due to the presence of extra bacteria attached to media.
The MBBR has an ability to adapt and let manipulate of all bio-spore bacteria that you have added to your waste system especially if you have an aeration system for an aerobic reactions. Now this bacteria form slimes on the internal and external body of your MBBR and keep un-spore a generating new amount of its species. This wills surely helps in lowering the numbers of BOD Thus for COD as well in minimizes the F.O.G and it surely plays an odor controlling rule.
