Do you think that Digital Marketing will replace traditional marketing in next 10 years?

(Only to be clear about my position of Digital Marketing, is that it´s only a Marketing tool; belonging to the communication/promotion strategy. Nothing else more.)

 

About your question, and in a very direct and short answer I would, definitely, say ....never! 

 

Your question remembered me something curious, maybe years ago. There was an Marketing tendency that was somehow forgotten. Was called Marketing One-to-One. Means  that you should capt direct contacts that occur individually between an company and ONE client. This personalization, I think, was never tottaly achieved. We never were able to satisfy individual needs, only certain profile groups. And this maintains until today. I think this, in those times, was the expoent of Marketing theories. (Read suggestion "Permission Marketing" - Godin).

 

Think too about RP, about Branding...or even about Empresarial Communication... will those also be substituted, in general and only, with digital communication/advertisiment? I think not.

 

Still regarding to yours question, I would like to ask some "traditional" questions..:

 

a) The companies will fail to implement Pricing strategies?

 

b) The companies will fail to develop products/services, brands, packaging, etc?

 

c) Companies will no longer have distribution channels?

 

d) Companies will no longer have physical spaces where the sales and merchandising techniques are indispensable? 

 

e) From all of yours potential clients/clients have all they access to the WWW? 

 

f) Cars, Houses sales, for example, will always need an high involvement purchase. Those sells will always need "credibility" and "security".Will you be able to communicate that only by digital?

 

..and so on

 

In my opinion, these issues will always belong to the "Traditional" Marketing. No matter how much impact of the www/digital will have in the companies/organizations, these variables are more actual than ever! More and more, and maybe can figure the opposite, the consumers/people/clients/potential clients search personalization, humanization, confidence and security with the brands/companies. All this is something that "Digital" Marketing only for it self will never achieve.

 

Concluding, "Digital" and "Traditional" Marketing, and some more other trends, should be integrated on one - it´s the called "Blended Marketing".

Traditional Marketing has its own roots. Digital Marketing cannot replace traditional marketing completely. The basic techniques used in digital marketing are same as of traditional marketing.

There could be companies in the future which could make digital marketing their main strategy and depend fully on digital media to market their products. These companies may develop an great advantage of low cost and economies of scale which may be formidable. More and more customers could choose to buy products through digital word or mouth if they find that trust can be developed this way.

However, it is hard to imagine a world without traditional means of marketing. There would be fragmentation of customers choices but traditional forms of marketing may prevail. The brick and mortal form of touch and feel selling cannot be totally replaced by virtual trust.

Digital marketing may going forward create a segment of one. That means, that technological advancements would allow companies to create unique products and services to satisfy each individual customers since3D printing can make this possible.

Even though supermarkets and hypermarkets have flourished, it has not meant the extinction of the neighbouring coldstore.Similarly, the print media has evolved to survive the digital onslaught. Traditional marketing may undergo some changes to survive but it may not become completely extinct unless there is a government regulation against it.

It depends on the product, target group and type of the market. I believe more developed countries tend to use digital marketing more than less developed. Same with young people - they resign from traditional marketing use in favour of digital. And I believe more luxury products also belongs to traditional marketing.

Digital marketing grow up more and more but the tradition marketing wont die. I think it will start to grow up because its a powerful tool with a long history and a larger future ahead. Think about traditional advertising from USA ... New York City, Las Vegas or Los Angeles. These are wonderful cities but they became famous for its power of traditional marketing. Now when you say New York City you have in your head the image with sky-towers full of advertises and billboards every where. Or when you say advertising you reminder about Super Bowl and his advertising where are thousand million bucks ... Digital marketing started to reach more audience but traditional marketing will be always alive. Especially if advertising agencies will realize the opportunities of traditional marketing ... it can be develop with cars or people commercials. I saw an advertising agency from Singapore which pay human beings to stick their cars with commercials or people who wear clothes with commercial messages ... The dinamic and diversity of people can be a powerful tool of traditional marketing but you must think outside the box (thats exactly what digital marketing did) ... thought outside the box and refresh traditional marketing

The first thing is to ask yourself what Traditional and Digital marketing means or reflects.

 

Right? Traditional marketing refers to marketing practices implemented via TV, Radio, Newspaper, Magazines, Telephone Book directories etc,

 

Ok? Digital marketing refers to advertising using digital channels such as search engines, websites, mobile apps, Email, Social media because they are targeted and measurable with the primordial objective of achieving KPIs and goals set by the business.

 

First of all, when starting a business, it is very important to identify your target customers, identify where they are based and take into consideration a huge range of demographics including, spending power, age, the things they like to do during their spare time, etc.

 

Now back to your question. If you look at what I have explained above, you will tend to see that traditional and digital marketing works together which each playing a different role and some point both sharing the same role. It is like a man and his wife. As man and wife, note that, one will always have more power in one way or the other depending on the region where they are based. In the western world, they will pretend that there is equality.

 

What I am saying in essence, is that; it depends on who you want to sell to. For example, if you are selling cars, it is quite obvious you won't targetyr olds. It does not mean that, some cannot buy but the main idea is that only a few of them can buy which means there is absolutely no business with this age gap.

 

If you are targeting-yrs old for example in Saudi Arabia, then you have got business because you know the traditions and customs of the people including lifestyle. The question now is this; how do you reach to this specific segment? Will you go by radio, tv, social media, web etc? How manyyr olds will surf the net, how many of them will download apps, how many of them will browse the internet on the move etc.

 

It is simply common sense to know that, in the evening after work, most people go home, rest and get ready for work the next day. Therefore, what do your target audiences engage with when they at home?% will watch a bit of TV and those that are internet savvy will browse the web, reply to emails and or chat with their friends and family members via social etc. Your marketing budget will determine your stand. Finally, TV helps to drive people through to digital channels at a very high rate. Digital channels then welcome the people and provide vital information that TV cannot provide because of the costs involved and try to convert them through the funnel into buyers.

 

If you run ads on traditional media (TV), will you reach to them? The answer is yes irrespective of age. Therefore traditional media will continue to play its bit because it comes with huge costs as compared to digital. However, if you are going succeed in digital, there are also huge costs involved as you willm need to employ a digital marketing specialist, SEO consultant, Link builder, Marketing strategist, Web builder and coordinator, Data mining specialist, PPC manager etc. However, a digital marketing specialist can handle all these roles but the burden will be too much. So there are huge costs involved with traditional and digital marketing.

 

But if I am a Nigerian, a country with millions of people. I will have different questions to ask myself. If I decide to go digital, what percentage has access to credit cards, what percentage is internet savvy, what percentage is educated with the ability to read and write in English, what percentage can afford to buy my product or services, what percentage has access to the internet, how fast is the internet, is there regular electricity to charge their phones and computers, etc Note that, TV for example, is part of digital and traditional equally. With the uprising of Internet of things, it is like possible that some segments of traditional will grow while some will decrease in conversion rates like radio for example which will instead produce more results in Nigeria and less results in the UK.

 

So to answer your question without too much talking, I will say that traditional marketing will continue to do its part while supporting digital to explode further within the next coming ten years. It will depend on the geography and the standard of living for the region taking into account GDP. Therefore, in the western world, digital will continue to be on the rise and in some developing countries, traditional marketing will remain the king. The two will continue to produce goals while some segments of traditional will remain as a huge ladder to digital. Other segments of tradition will start to become obsolete but again it will depend on the geography.

 

So there are a lot of things to consider while answering your question. If I were to answer the question completely, I will have to provide pages upon pages. So, let's leave it here. I hope it makes sense. Enjoy the write-up.

I don't think so, people will keep on going to malls and walk the streets which means we will keep seeing billboards and all the traditional stuff
