How to handle a micromanaging boss without getting fired?

A micromanaging boss is determined to micromanage, and it's unlikely you'll be able to do anything about that.   Consequently, you must ensure that she/he has a plentiful supply of things to micromanage. 

I'll give you an example.  A long time ago I used to have to write reports that were checked and edited by my immediate boss before being sent up the line.  He always sent back lots of useless corrections, including correcting grammatical "mistakes" which were in fact correct in the first place.   Once I discovered this, I checked back over the previous papers to discover what his bugbears were.  Every document I sent up then had at least one bugbear, a couple of obvious grammatical errors and a word that I was sure would extend his vocabulary.  

None of these "errors" were on the last page, the one that would have his signature.  I could then ignore his corrections, print off the rest of the document and add the last page.  Overall, it took about the same amount of time, but I was in control of the process,  the final document was of higher quality, and it was fun rather than horrible.  After a while I got my colleague, who wrote similar reports, to join in.  We even got to the point of putting in made up words.
