First of all enter the start date and end date.

Then take difference.

For Example:

type in A1 cell (start date)

type in A2 cell (end date)

type in A3 cell (=A2-A1) and press enter

There is a lesser known function in Excel called "DATEDIF(start_date,end_date,unit)" where start date and end date are two dates you want to refer to and the "unit" the duration type you want returned. In this question, since you want to know the number of days between two dates, the unit shall be "d" which denotes to days. One can also use "m" for months and "y" for years. These abbreviations should be written in double quotes because those are text values.

Caution: This function does not appear in standard excel formulae due to unknown reasons.

To get the result we just have to use formula ENDDATE- STARTDATE. We can also use the DATE function for the same.

Make sure that the two dates are entered in date format and not text. Then simply subtract the latter date from the earlier date so that the difference is positive.
