Sylvia's father was a Nazi sympathizer and her mother,a Jew.The Holocaust was all about Nazis exterminating Jews.Sylvia actually against Hitlers's campaign to annihilate all the jews.Sylvia actually loved her father just like any other daughter but she was caught in a mental dilemma between love for her father and love for her mother who was a Jew. This mental angst is the trauma brought out in the poem as a kind of inescapable frustration, even calling him a bastard.

One need not take the poem as an allegory of the Holocaust or is the poem necessarily autobographical. The poem is symbolic of the struggle in Sylvia's mind since her daddy's death.
