Depends on a number of factors. Some that come to my mind are:

  1. Product Demand: Do you stock few fast moving items and lots of slow moving items? If yes then you will need a dedicated forward pick area for your fast movers. This area gets replenished from bulk/pallet locations. You also need to stock your fast moving items on shelves where they can be easily picked. You can have narrow aisles but lower height shelving for manual pickers.

  2. Product type: Are your products perishable or have limited shelf life? You will need a shelving to ensure FIFO.

  3. Type of product: Heavy/Light? If you have heavier products you will likely need bulk storage locations where fork lifts or other heavy load moving vehicles can move freely.

  4. Type of transportation: Do you ship via parcel? Or is it mostly TL/LTL? This may influence the size of shipping lanes.

  5. Value added services: Does your product need additional work before shipping? In that case you will need dedicated area for this work.
