Why should we hire you as a Petroleum engineer over the others waiting to be interviewed?

If an interviewer asks you, "Why should we hire you?" in an interview, the interviewer is giving you the opportunity to sell yourself. Think of yourself as the product,  you have to talk about your experiences in this field, your certificates , and what you have learned from your courses 

The question is meant to gauge your competence for the job profile offered. Therefore you need to highlight your past achievements & experience in similar type of industry in order to match the job profile. You should be ready to give specific examples in case the interviewer so desires.

Secondly your qualifications specific to the job requirement needs to be emphasised. Then also show how with your positive attitude & hard work you can prove to be an asset to the company by highlighting some of you other achievements.

As this is an interview question, so you should demonstrate you capabilities and skills as an important asset to the company, therefore you should be able to explain and "sell" yourself as the best candidate they are looking for:

1. Identify your skills

2. List your achievements

3. Explain what you can add and do to the company !
