Pavements are design on the bases of " Serviceability ". We can fix the type of pavement on the following bases.
1) Traffic and loading
2) Environment
3) ESAL
4) Failure Criterion
In Road Construction, we don't fix the pavement type. we may fix pavement distresses of we may select the suitable pavement type.
There are two types of pavement; flexible pavement and rigid pavement.
Flexible pavement suits low to moderate traffic volumes while rigid pavement is more suitable to high traffic volumes and runways.
Rigid pavement consists of cement mixture while Flexible pavement is constructed mainly using asphalt mixture.
To control the performance of Flexible asphalt mixture we should control the quality of each of its components.
Flexible pavement mixture consists of Asphalt + aggregate. Aggregate is assigned to carry the main loads of the road while asphalt provide smoothness, ridability, comfortable to drivers.
Aggregate should be tested to make sure that it's characteristics ( which are shape, size, angularity, content of clay and friable materials, ...etc) are within the allowable tolerances. the strength of aggregate should be tested also using CBR test.
Asphalt should be tested, classified and analyzed using most advanced techniques which investigate the mechanical performance of asphalt and it's suitability to both climatic conditions and traffic volumes.
Design of asphalt mixture using the suitable compaction process and aggregate gradation helps in controlling the performance and decrease pavement distresses and failures

Flexible pavement is constructed mainly using asphalt material. To control the performance of Flexible asphalt mixture we should control the quality of each of its components. first component and the most effective component on the rid-ability and comfortably of the pavement is Asphalt, asphalt should be categorize and analyzed using most advanced techniques which investigate the mechanical performance of asphalt and it's suitability to both climatic conditions and traffic volumes.
Second component is aggregate, Aggregate should be tested to make sure that it's characteristics ( which are shape, size, angularity, content of clay and friable materials, ...etc) are within the allowable tolerances. the strength of aggregate should be tested also using CBR test.

Site preparation and conduct regular inspection to assess pavement condition
