  • Challenging and exciting work - Ensure every employee has a challenge plan and is periodically asked to rate the degree of job excitement.
  • Opportunities - Reward managers for developing their employees and make sure that employees are held accountable for following through on their individual learning plans.
  • Recognition and reward for performance - Make it clear what the incentives are and reward fairly across all departments so employees see the benefits of effort.
  • Control over the job - You've employed your staff to do a job, so let them do it. Trust people to be able to shape the way they work and the projects they get involved in.
  • Business Impact - Provide employees with periodic reports on the effect their projects are having on the business so they know their work makes a difference.

Motivation in Today’s Workplace

Motivation in today’s workplace is affected by a number of factors, including:

A decreasing emphasis on money.

An increasing amount of work.

An increasing need to work together in teams.

Placing Less Emphasis on Money

For many years, conventional wisdom held that employees worked primarily for money and could be “motivated” through a combination of financial reward and fear. Within this perspective, employers might offer a financial reward as their only performance incentive, or they might try to generate fear by threatening to fire or demote employees if they did not perform at a certain level.

Today, we realize that our reasons for performing well on the job are far more complex. Though we often define a good job as a good-paying job, many of us would also consider other issues, such as job satisfaction and time for a family life.

Patrick is a case in point. When he began his job as a pharmaceutical sales representative, he was excited about the job’s high salary. He pounded the pavement every day and spent much of his free time thinking of new ways to generate new sales. The hard work paid off, and Patrick rose through the ranks, getting more pay, more commissions, and many  bonuses.

As Patrick’s income grew, so did his family’s possessions. First, they bought a new car, then a new house, then new furniture for every room. Patrick worked, worked, worked, and he bought more, more, more.

But after a few years, Patrick began to be dissatisfied. He had everything that money could buy, but he barely saw his family all week, and he was getting tired of sales. He longed for new challenges and time to spend with his children before they grew up and left home.

Situations like Patrick’s are more common than you might think. Many of today’s workers are not primarily motivated by a desire for money. They crave a deeper satisfaction from their

jobs and won’t respond to old-style management techniques.   1

Take a Moment

Why do you work? Does the thought of more money inspire you to do your best, or do other rewards inspire you more? List some of the factors that help you increase your motivation.

Dealing with Greater Amounts of Work

One of the primary challenges facing today’s worker is an increased workload. Workforces have been downsized.

Technology has pushed us to a faster pace. The result is that employees must learn a variety of new tasks and use their minds and bodies at a faster rate than ever before. Though these changes may bring many benefits, the stress involved in any change can affect employee motivation.

I think the first factor that should motivate an employee in an organization is purpose("why I am here?/what is my goal?") ,it is also the same as the head manager already set up the company's goal. The company won't move higher and higher in terms of its succeeding goals without the talents, contributions and minds of employees who are part of the its success.Meaning, the company's succes is relative to the employees who are also part of the goal. Since every employees have their specific goals in which once they are collected ,it hits the goal of the company. The second one would be service ,to keep them motivated they need to ask this question "am I contributing for the company's development or success?".It also means that the company needs you and your service. The company cannot provide service for its customers without the help of the employees as well,so one way or another they are interrelated.

The third thing would be passion,it's like you ask yourself as if "do I find myself happy and fun, with ease, joy, and love while doing this job?". without passion, one cannot find his true happiness, and it will also affect the performance of the company. This is also another secret ingredient for a happy and peaceful career.

Clearly define your vision

Give employees what they want and need.

Communicate often and well.

Get everyone engaged.

Stay the course. Don’t keep changing things all the time.

Practice random acts of kindness. Remember to say thank you in all kinds of ways.

Coach for success.

Act fairly.

Inspect what you expect. Employees don’t care what you ask them to do as long as they know you care.

Give respect and create trust.

Don’t be a jerk. It goes without saying, right? Not! Everyone has examples of bosses doing stupid things.

Make work fun.
