My answer will be based on Maslow's hierarchy of needs includes five motivational needs.
This five stage model can be divided into basic (or deficiency) needs (e.g. physiological, safety, love, and esteem) and growth needs (self-actualization).
The deficiency, or basic needs are said to motivate people when they are unmet. Also, the need to fulfil such needs will become stronger the longer the duration they are denied. For example, the longer a person goes without food the more hungry they will become.
One must satisfy lower level basic needs before progressing on to meet higher level growth needs. Once these needs have been reasonably satisfied, one may be able to reach the highest level called self-actualization.
Every person is capable and has the desire to move up the hierarchy toward a level of self-actualization. Unfortunately, progress is often disrupted by failure to meet lower level needs. Life experiences, including divorce and loss of job may cause an individual to fluctuate between levels of the hierarchy.
Maslow noted only one in a hundred people become fully self-actualized because our society rewards motivation primarily based on esteem, love and other social needs.
These needs differentiate me from others and direct my progression.
Reliability: People are seldom, if ever on time. Always be on time. If you are going to be late, call or send a text message. Everyone (hopefully) has a mobile phone contract in 2012 with free text messages or a Wi-Fi connection.
There are NO excuses for lateness. When you schedule plans with someone, do not be ambiguous. Do not say “hey, what are you doing next week?” instead, say “hey, what are you doing next Saturday? I’m free in the afternoon. We should make plans.” Take control and lead; people like to be lead. If someone texts you, text them back, even if you are busy when you receive it, remember it and return to it later. If you promised your friend you were going to pick them up from the airport, proof read their article, send them a link to a video, do it. Today, people expect the opposite to happen; be the exception. People will judge you based on your consistency to be a reliable person, do not let yourself or others down. 02. Presence: Earnest Hemmingway said “when people talk, listen completely. Most people never listen.” When someone is talking to you, be present with them. Make eye contact. Ignore all distractions. Do not take your phone out if you have a SMS, it is extremely rude. If it is a phone call, excuse yourself and then answer it, but only if it is an important call. 03 Autonomy: Do what you want to do because YOU want to do it, not because your parents want you to do it, your peers want you to do it or even because you THINK you should it because of social conditioning. Whether it is how you want to dress, what you want to do for a living, or who you want to date, do what you want to do because YOU want to do it. 04 Authenticity: Be honest with people and honest to their face. If you like someone as a friend or more, tell them and tell them why. Do not concern yourself with what they MAY think. They will appreciate the honesty. Similarly, if you do not like someone, do not be fake and lead them to believe that you do like them. If they address it, then be honest. Do not talk about people behind their back; if you do have an opinion of someone and chose to converse with another, would you be prepared to tell them to their face if you had to? Be honest with yourself. What do you like about yourself and what do you not like about yourself? Accept what you do not like about yourself and if possible, improve it. Otherwise, love your imperfections; your loved one will only do the same one day. 05 Persistence: Persistence pays off. If you have a goal, accept that, sometimes, there are roadblocks. Break through them. There is more than one road to the destination and sometimes, it is the journey that is as, if not more important, than the destination. Develop your self-awareness and notice what you see along the way, it may be important. 06 Positivity: Be positive. People like optimistic people; if gives hope to those who do not have it. That is to not to say be a Pollyanna and live in denial when you feel unhappy. Yes, sometimes, life can be unfair, but try and see the seed of good in every situation, it is a useful skill to develop. 07 Gratitude: Develop an attitude of gratitude. Be grateful for everything you have, one day, you may not have it. Actually recite in your head or aloud all that you are thankful for, every day. Make it a daily ritual. I am sure there are a lot more, but these are the ones that really resonate with me at the moment.
