Interpersonal communication is the process by which people exchange information, feelings, and meaning through verbal and non-verbal messages: it is face-to-face communication. Interpersonal communication is not just about what is actually said - the language used - but how it is said and the non-verbal messages sent through tone of voice, facial expressions, gestures and body language. When you have the opportunity to observe some interpersonal communication, make a mental note of the behaviours used, both verbal and non-verbal. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------ Observe and think about the following factors: • Who are the communicators? • What messages were exchanged? • What (if any) noise distorts the message? • How is feedback given? • What is the context of the communication? By observing others - making a conscious effort to understand how communication occurs - you will think about how you communicate and be more aware of the messages you send.
