An ideological conflict between the West on one hand and the East on the other. This ideological divide between socialism & capitalism would soon extend beyond Europe to various parts of the world.

The Cold War is the term given to the post World war II period from the end of the of that war to the destruction of the Berlin War in and the eventual collapse of the Soviet Union in. In essence, was a struggle between the capitalist United States and its allies in Western Europe (known as the Western Block) and the Communist Soviet Union with its allies in Eastern Europe (known as the Eastern Block). During that period, each superpower intervened through the support of its respective local allies and proxies throughout the World.    

At the heart of this struggle was the protection of the respective superpowers blocks economically through the Marshall Aid Plan in. It was also manifested politically through the Missile Cuban Crisis in, and direct militarily intervention by both superpowers and their respective allies as was the case in the Korean War from to, the Vietnam war from to, and the Soviet Invasion of Afghanistan from to.
