Every organisation is different as each faces different environment conditions and challenges. It is increasingly difficult for organisatiions in different sectors to be able to recruit and retain talent. The purpose of strategic HR is in fact to ensure that an organisation has the right number of staff with the right skills at the right time. It is the job of HR specialists to find strategies and create the conditions for this to happen. Depending of the situation, and on the available resources, different solutions could be applicable both in the short and long term: training current employees; creating the conditions for the organisation to become an employer of first choice, able to attract and retain the best available talent; assessing and improving recruitment and selections strategies and procedures; ensuring careful and effective succession planning; partnering with local universities and training institutes to develop a long term plan to improve the quantity and quality of the available workforce, devising short-term, creative solutions (eg. partnerships with suppliers and/or other organisations to provide temporary support). In any case, it is important to acknowledge that this problem needs a strategic approach and strategic interventions both in the short and long term, to make sure the organisation has a sufficient number of adequately qualified and skilled staff to achieve both short-term and long-term goals, stay competitive and ensure sustainability.
