Training and development services help small businesses develop a workforce with the knowledge and skills to meet their business objectives. A marketing program is essential to build awareness of the benefits of training and to maximize participation. However, a survey by training provider Expertus found that only percent of internal training departments had a formal training plan, while percent had no training budget.

Training and development requires a significant investment in time and resources. In, U.S. companies spent an average of $1, per learner on training and development, according to the American Society for Training & Development. Internal costs such as staff salaries and program development accounted for about two-thirds of the expenditure, with external training services making up the remainder. To secure the right level of resources, the marketing program must therefore build the commitment of the senior management team.

Management Communications

By communicating with the management team, you can raise awareness of the importance of and the benefits of training. To encourage involvement, ask members of the senior management team to sponsor training and launch the program to employees. Around two-thirds of respondents to the Expertus survey reported that management recommendations helped to increase participation in training.

Employee Communications

You also need to convince employees of the personal benefits of the training and development program. Explain how training will help to improve their personal performance and increase their chances of promotion. To maintain employees’ commitment to training, a motivation program should form part of the marketing strategy. Recognizing and rewarding employees who exceed their training and development targets encourages competition and improves performance. Publish training results and achievements on your website and ask senior executives to present awards.

Product Development

To increase levels of participation, it’s important to develop training services that are convenient for employees and their managers. Pressure on time and costs means that managers may be reluctant to release employees for courses. The training program should therefore offer a choice of formal sessions and online courses that employees can follow in their own time. A balanced training program would include classroom sessions, e-learning programs, workshops and seminars. You can extend the scope of your training and development program by working with external training providers such as training consultants, universities, business schools or companies supplying training resources.
