What is the difference between selenium and qtp?

selenium is useing for web based applications only but qtp we can use web based and window based application

• Selenium is open source, But QTP(Now called as UFT) is a Licensed software.
• Selenium  uses JavaScript, QTP uses VB Script
• Windows based and Mainframe based Applications can't be automated with Selenium but with QTP its possible.

Selenium: Selenium is a open source so there is no licensing and renewal cost for this tool.It's free of cost.Its supports plug-ins to achive desird result.Selenium supports more numer of OS like windows ,Linux.It can be used only test web applications.It supports IE,Opera,Firefox,Safari and few more.Its a developped languages like Java,Python,Ruby,Pearl,C# and more.

QTP : Qtp is a licens,its very costly.Its also supports add ons but users needs purcahase for them.Qtp supports only windows .It can be test web as well as desktop applications.It supports IE and Firefox.Qtp developed only VB script or Java script.Its supports mobile,mail,web forum.

QTP is commercial tool licensed by HP and now renamed as UFT

Whereas selenium is open source free tool.

QTP uses Vb script as scripting language whereas with selenium java, c#, ruby, python are compatible

Selenium is a open source tool wheras QTP is a liscensed tool

Selenium is open source which means its free and doesnt require license. Where as, QTP is licensed product from HP and it requires fees. 

Selenium supports multiple languages like Java, Python, PHP. But QTP supports only VB Script.

Selenium is limited only to Web based applications. But QTP can be used for Web based apps and desktop apps
