The risk of getting sued when the public or individual safety is an issue or concern. So, it could be in many fields of engineering and even in other specialties/professions. Examples are as follows:
Civil Engg: If the structural design or foundation design is faulty, the buildings of bridges may collapse.
Mech. Engg: If the roller coaster design is faulty, the coaster may fall down and cost many lives.
Elect. Engg: If the electrical transmission tower is faulty, it may collapse and the people nearby could be electrocuted.
Chem. Engg: If the boiler design is faulty, it may bust and cost many lives.
And so on…………………………….
However, the above casualties may also happen, when the design was OK but execution was not as per design. In addition, even if the design and execution was OK, the materials used (cement, MS rod, MS sheet, angle bar etc.) was not as per specification (now, it is the fault of Procurement Manager/ Materials Engineer). Further, the fault may be also with the inspection Engineer / consultant Engineer who checked the final construction and signed the acceptance report.
So, a detail investigation is needed who is at fault and this is lengthy process.
I would like to say that all Engineers must act with precision in all respect (planning, design, execution, procurement, inspection etc.) and maintain ethics and integrity which would help them serve their customers/clients well without getting into unnecessary litigation process.
Thank you for the invitation, I apologized for the answer I leave the answer for the professionals
