If the area of consulting is education or training then it should be an easy and smooth shift. Since he/she has 16 years in that field, they'd know the ins and outs of it, the dos and don'ts, the tricks of the trade, so they can use that in their consulting. I recommend the work of Alan Weiss "Million Dollar Consulting". Alan wrote many other books about consulting and they are considered the blue print for any new or seasoned consultant.
