A functional end artery, like the Splenic artery for instance, is the sole artery that supply oxygenated blood to a tissue or an organ. End arteries are critical since any occlusion in those arteries leads a tissue/organ to be completely cut off of oxygenated blood, leading to eventual necrosis. For instance, if the end artery supplying the myocardium of the heart is occluded (i.e. due to atherosclerosis), then an individual will experience myocardial infarction or an ischemic stroke of the heart muscle.
