I often use white board or simply piece of paper to draw/sketch high level details. Bad drawing is always better than dry complex storytelling.

If you are in a hurry for the illustrations and you need to present them, make a mood board of your ides for the project that include: color codes, general mood, purpose of the project, and illustration styles that will be your inspiration or maybe the visual language of the project( there are many wonderful illustrations on behance and pinterest to get inspired from). If you have the time to illustrate your idea, present your mood board to an illustrator in order for him/her to design.

If you are not an illustrator then you need to involve an illustrator at the design stage of your work

1. I should study first the effects of this idea on the entire project to see if it is applicable or not .

2. Evaluate the idea ( time - cost - benefit - save - additional options - ... etc ) .

3. Decide if it is beneftial to illustrate or not .

4. Contact my Boss / Chief / Head Manger to illustrate the idea .
