b. Acronyms used in Demand Planning

For decades, manufacturers have used material requirements planning (MRP) to coordinate the resources needed for production and synchronize their supply chains.

The main function of material requirements planning is to guarantee material availability , that is, it is used to procure or produce the requirement quantities on time both for internal purposes and for sales and distribution. This process involves the monitoring of stocks and, in particular, the automatic creation of procurement proposals for purchasing and production.

In doing so, MRP tries to strike the best balance possible between

  • optimizing the service level and

  • minimizing costs and capital lockup.

Master production scheduling (MPS) is a form of MRP that concentrates  planning on the parts or products that have the great influence on company profits or which dominate the entire production process by taking critical resources. These items are selected for a separate MPS run that takes place before the MRP run.  The MPS run is conducted without a BOM explosion so that the MRP controller can ensure that the Master schedule items (MSI) are correctly planned before the detailed MRP run takes place.

Distribution Resources Planning (DRP):

DRP Provides the basis for integrating supply chain inventory information and physical distribution activities with the manufacturing Planning and control system.

Managing the flow of materials between firms, warehouses, distribution centers.

DRP helps manage these materials flows just like MRP did in Manufacturing.

Links Firms in the supply chain by providing planning records that carry demand information from receiving points to supply points and vice versa.

Hello Team,

Multiorganization material requirements plans (MRP), master production schedules (MPS), and distribution requirements plans (DRP) explode through the bill of material to generate component requirements by evaluating:

    • order modifiers
    • production and transportation lead times
    • sourcing strategy
    • bill of material changes
    • engineering changes
    • item information

It then calculates time-phased material requirements. Each item may have different attributes that affect the recommendations generated by the planning process.
