PMI methodology (with the PMP certificate) is just a guide for any type of projects, I have experienced many types of projects far away from engineering, and the PMI/PMP methodology was very successful guide.
It is just a way how to organize yourself while you are managing the projects...
you may follow it or part of it...as per the need of your project.
to be eligible to take the PMP exam, you should meet a criteria as described in the following link: you should prove that you have some years of project experience (3 years if you are university graduate), and you have the minimum project management education.
(35 hours study you can take them in1 week course)

PMP is a framework that provides guidelines on best practices proven in Project Management.
It can be applied to any field including Engineering, Decorations, IT related projects etc.
etc.
Your experience can help you if you have it in the capacity of a Manager, falling in any one of the knowledge areas currently listed in PMBOK5th edition.
The requirement of basic eduction remains there ofcourse.
Go ahead and submit the application for approval on PMI's website (there is no fee involved for this process), there is no harm even if it gets rejected.
You will get an idea of what sort of experience you should go for in order to appear for the PMP examination.
One important point here is that you can also go for additional trainings focusing on Project Management to gain PDUs that will help you in covering any experience deficiencies.
If your application is approved, then you can proceed with the next procedure of paying your fee and preparing for the exam.

Salam, Your experience and what you do is all about taking the project team from the present situation to achieving project objectives within a structured framework for the planning, organising and managing of tasks and resources to accomplish a defined objective, usually with constraints on time, cost and quality.
PMI/APM is about a personal choice, but i think APM is a closer match to your requirements.

A project is an endeavor that has a goal(product or result), a schedule, a beginning and an end.
Almost all human activities will fall under this description and may be treated as projects so, yes project management is not limited to engineering activities only.
Your work as a decoration project manager will count as experience to comply with PMI PMP certification.
I suggest to those interested in acquiring the PMP certification to look up the PMI website pmi.com
