The Ribbon

Word 2013 uses a tabbed Ribbon system instead of traditional menus. The Ribbon contains multiple tabs, each with several groups of commands. You will use these tabs to perform the most common tasks in Word.

  The Home tab gives you access to some of the most commonly used commands for working with Word 2013, including copying and pasting, formatting, aligning paragraphs, and choosing document styles. The Home tab is selected by default whenever you open Word.

Ribbon

When referring to Microsoft office programs such as Microsoft Word and Excel, the Ribbon is a feature that replaces the traditional file menu. As can be seen in the image, the Ribbon dynamically changes based on what the user is currently doing. In this example, the Ribbon for "Write" is being displayed.

Below is an update version of the Ribbon introduced with Office 2010 and how the Ribbon appears in Microsoft Word.

As we mentioned before, the Ribbon changes depending on what you're doing in Word, Excel or another Office program. For example, if you're working with images, the Ribbon displays all of the available modifications that can be performed on them.

The ribbon runs on the top of the application and is the replacement for the toolbars and menus. The ribbons have various tabs on the top, and each tab has its own group of commands.

A ribbon contains icons (commands) which are commonly used for a program.

AutoCad has for each version of its program customized ribbons ...you can customize it to your needs. 

Electrical, Civil, Mechanical Engineering ... just to name a few which have a programmed basic ribbon.

ribbon a very good new feature at windows and its applications , and other new applications , all the answers define ribbon excellent

I would like to suggest Ms. Elke Woofter's answer for your question. As I am more based on AutoCAD, we can use commands RIBBONCLOSE for closing ribbon and RIBBON to open ribbon.
