Can an employee take leave or vacation during his notice period?

It would really depend on the individual circumstances. If someone is giving notice due to ill health or not fitting in or performance issues then perhaps it is less disruptive to have them on leave rather than causing problems at work. If they are giving notice due to an emergency situation or having to leave for a reasonable purpose then it is not of benefit to anyone to be harsh and arbitrary. If you are in a quiet period and will be paying out their leave after the notice period then it may benefit the company to let them go early. It needs common sense and a human approach to look at the circumstances. The laws and contracts for each country and person will be different and may also affect the decision.

The leave is not a matter of a right but privilege. Therefore normally No. However, it is permissible on medical ground if the cause of notice period is on medical ground and if his/her presence is not essential during notice period.

It is mostly at employer's discretion to approve the leave during notice period, or the employer may approve it with a condition that the leave days will not be considered as part of the notice period.
