The best and most realistic way is to combine VRaySun light source and VRayDome light with daily HDR. Make sure that the sun position on HDR matches VRaySun position in scene. This scheme works in natural way, mixing yellowish sun light and diffused bluish light from sky.
The VRaySun is located in the (Create - Lights - VRay) panel. You can also specify the VRaySun as the sun type inside a 3ds Max Daylight system.
1. If you have large scene with a lot of details you should use Vray sun with dome light to generate a lot of indirect light for your tiny spaces to not face a problem with Contrast when going to color correction
2. if you have small scene with a lot of space it's enough to use Direct light with vray dome light to not generate a lot of light because this may burn your contrast and lost the small details on large spaces
3. if you will use physical camera be sure of render seeings specially if you will do an animation but for static you will not face a lot of problem with that
The Sunlight and Daylight systems use light in a system that follows the geographically correct angle and movement of the sun over the earth at a given location. You can choose location, date, time, and compass orientation. You can also animate the date and time. This system is suitable for shadow studies of proposed and existing structures. In addition, you can animate Latitude, Longitude, North Direction, and Orbital Scale.
The best way is to apply VRAY SKY and then add VRAY SUN
There is no preset to be standard for daylight, it's depend on those:
- Do you want to use physical camera or standard camera (physical camera give you more option for light sensitivity so it's give you wide range to setup)
- Do you use physical sun or standard light like direct light or spot light
- if your Exterior scene including a lot of space like Exterior Villa or tiny spaces like small street
So you can try those steps if you want to understand the diffrent
