- Go to the other: have a genuine interest for him

- Smile: this is a dumb brand of welcome that calms and valorise the other

- Listen to what the other says it always seems more important to what you have to say

- Look at : is a mark of politeness and also the first way to establish communication

Gestures linked to cultural habits:

- To get up

- Remove the right hand (handshake)

- Be silent: we have nothing to say which means finished

- Never look at the time at that moment

- To direct (without brutality) towards the door by passing the visitor before you

Well! There are a number of ways you can use body language and non-verbal communication to project confidence.

Even if you are feeling shy, insecure or uncomfortable, the following body language gestures will help you come across as more confident to others. I have used several of these before in situations when I have felt insecure or anxious:

  • Do not stand with your hands clasped in front of your crotch (as pictured below). This position instantly makes you look insecure and unsure. Instead, force yourself to stand with your hands behind your back. Clasping your hands behind your back projects confidence and authority, as the entire front of the body is exposed to others. This basically says "I am not afraid to show myself and be vulnerable."
  • Maintain a good posture at all times. Keeping your shoulders back and holding your head in a normal, straight forward position will help you project confidence. Posture is particularly important. Don't roll your shoulders forward or hunch your back. Doing so sends the message to others that you are very shy, tired or even sad. Having poor posture also increases the stress on your body.
  • Make eye contact with others, even those you feel afraid of! Try your best to practice good eye contact. Look others in the eyes when they are speaking to you to show you are listening. Don't stare, but just do what feels right. Look away every so often. Eye contact is especially important when dealing with a boss or another person in a superior position to yourself. By holding eye contact, you are telling them, you can tell the other person they don't scare you! I know from experience that this can be hard if you are shy or are easily intimidated by people of authority. It's something I'm still working on myself and I've realised how important it is.
  • Avoid the obvious "nervous tells". These are small gestures that we all tend to do when we are either nervous, shy, uncomfortable, unsure or insecure about something or a particular situation. If you pay close enough attention, you can catch yourself doing them. I have used pictures below to more easily demonstrate these tells. As you can see, each gesture sends a message of insecurity. Thus, try to avoid doingthese gestures when you want to project confidence!
