Having knowledge on both SharePoint administration and developement is mandatory to be a strong SharePoint architect/consultant
Share Point Administartor is better because in development you know only requirement and development but Administartor scopre of work is bigger. he need maintain the deplloyment, secuity and enviorment
You can't separate Administration & Development, if you are strong in .Net framework(c#,ASP) go with Administration. or else Administration. for SharePoint administrator position you should know Windows Admin Concepts Like(AD,Exchange, Powershell Cmdlets)
Both are Vital role for Smooth Sharepoint Project Operations,It's always good to have experties/Knowledge in both.
From my point of view if you are SharePoint developer, you should also be quite good SharePoint administrator.
Both are Complete each other
Both are important to own side but i am with Sharepoint administrtor.
SharePoint developer would be someone who is coding functionality like workflows, web parts, Lists, features, site columns, content type.
SharePoint administrator would be someone who administers the site through the web interface, no coding required, spends time in Central Admin and Site Settings.
I think this two part very important and every one I think this two part very important and everyone depending.
every one has different role in the project , for example
if we need to configure services in customer machines and resolve active directory with the server we will ask sharepoint administrator
if we need to customize some out of the box webparts , develope new apps or develope workflows we ask sharepoint developer
It depends on the scope of work. When detail/advanced custom development is needed such as complex workflow eg using Nintex etc, the role will definitely look for Sharepoint Developer. But for beginners to intermediate Sharepoint environment, the role will settle only for Sharepoint Administrator, it can fulfill abt 80% of customer needs, and this is good enough for a start.
