I think it's better to guide him some basic of web design terminology such as grid system, how to maintain web dimension or pixel base design for web. You need to also follow his/her design while he's working on so that if you found anything that is not suitable for web tell him so that he could left it.
Even though Graphics designer and front end designer both plays the same role..,
FED do things more specific.., ie they play the role as a Designer, Programmer and Some time developer.., where as GD do only the designing part..
