A ‘Brainstorming’ Question indeed! Bundle of thanks Respected Sir  Omar Saad Ibrahem  for putting forth such an interesting topic for discussion.

The role of the LEADER is to establish;

  • the mission (purpose),
  • vision (what they wish to become), and
  • values (how they wish to behave).

In my opinion, during the course of last hundred years, the FUNDAMENTALS of LEADERSHIP in their purest form have changed LITTLE, but the BEHAVIORS to be a successful Leader - one respected by his/her followers - have MASSIVELY CHANGED.

Look back to the days of the Great Depression and consider how Leaders demanded things be done without the need for consultation or explanation. Command and obey was the accepted nature of Leadership during that period. Now, compare that with how good Leaders get results today.

TODAY’S Leader carefully communicates a vision to his team, and then outlines a mission which will ultimately lead to the attainment of this vision. Along the journey, he has to keep the team informed of their progress and have the courage to alter the plan should it not be working as envisioned.

Over the past century, we have seen the evolvement of Leadership styles from Authoritarian to Participative and, more recently, Delegation.

AUTHORITARIAN is where Leaders tell their ‘followers’ what they want done and how they want it done, often using abusive language and resorting to the fear factor to get results.

PARTICIPATIVE is a form of Leadership which often includes one or more followers  in the decision-making process, determining what needs to be done and how they will do it. It illustrates that leaders do not have to know everything and should not be afraid to draw on the knowledge or experience of followers. This often leads to the formation of a team with better decision-making qualities, although the leader still retains final decision-making authority.

With globalization, technological innovation and the growing number of linkages among people, activities and events, today’s pace of change is relentless. The people of the world mix and mingle as never before, forging new partnerships and creating more culturally diverse workplaces. Increasingly, groups of companies collaborate to investigate new opportunities and exploit new markets.

In this volatile, uncertain and often controversial era of ours, today’s LEADERS have a vibrant vision with the ability to cut through the clutter of information to communicate that vision to multiple stakeholders in an effective way. They lead through influence, not the power of their position. The HIERARCHICAL command and control structures of the past are gone. The days of simply telling someone to do something are gone.

In addition to influencing their employees, today’s Leaders also influence people outside of their firms to create, capture and distribute value through a network of organizations known as an  enterprise. And since no single leader directly controls all parts of the network, leadership is DISTRIBUTED and/or DELEGATED.

In a nutshell, it can rightly be said that  LEADERSHIP has definitely evolved in the last years and will continue to evolve indefinitely. Nothing stands still, you are either going forward or backwards, so to remain relevant, EVOLUTION IS A CONSTANT.

It has changed over the years. In the past leadership was either situational or dictative. Today leadership has gone to the next level where engaging and empowering teams is a key to success. Leader empowers people so that they become future leaders and can take decisions. Leaders also need to be role models. Its transformational leadership.

Leadership it self never changes. . But leaders do. before leaders where hardworking and and facing hardship every step. .because they where leading the people who needed lot of understanding.. also earlier time leader need to be self service rendering. .. now due to new and latest technology and new innovative communication system has made it easy to reach all levels of people. .now leader need only to polish the people as they are already with inherent qualities. by and large learning is a continuous change in human behaviour wder it's leadership or any other field. .

Details change, but fundamentals don't.  Leadership is about people, and in spite of the many superficial and important differences, people everywhere and everywhen are much the same.
