Some suggestions:

  • Read about and discuss the topic with them in a general way. So for example, if they need to read an article or paper, or chapter, discuss it with them in detail so they have an understanding of the text.
  • Come up with similar questions and examples to work through that are not that specific question, but similar to it - this is especially useful in math
  • Ask them questions that help them figure out the answer.
  • Use physical examples, conduct experiments, have activities

For example:When studying the water cycleI took an old already damaged book and put it in the freezeri boiled water on the stoveasking these questions:the water is less in the pan, where is it going? (they were quick to point out, it was becoming steam. So that is evaporation...Then I grab the book out of the freezer and hold it above the steamwater begins to condense...I ask them whats happening etc...then they can answer questions concerning evaporation, condensation, precipitation...without me telling them what to write.
