Well Good Question :) ever, I don't know regarding leadership answer, what a single muslim can do to be united,
1. Unity will come when we look everyone in a same angle that we are all muslim(Like people differentiate rich and poor people, Other country comparision).
2. I think wishing of Assalamualikum to everyone who ever we met who ever we see, even unknown muslim brother too.(Most of the people says salam to only known people) will bring unity among us.
3. Every muslim should Knowing exactly why we are here in this world, We are not here to make relationship of our own choice, we are here to make a contact, make a friend, make a relationship for the sake of Allah.
