The aim of copy-editing is to ensure that whatever appears in public is accurate, easy to follow, fit for purpose and free of error, omission, inconsistency and repetition. This process picks up embarrassing mistakes, ambiguities and anomalies, alerts the client to possible legal problems and analyses the document structure for the typesetter/designer.
Formatting refers to the appearance or presentation of your essay. Another word for formatting is layout. Most essays contain at least four different kinds of text: headings, ordinary paragraphs, quotations and bibliographic references. You may also include footnotes and endnotes. You also have to consider the fonts that you use and page numbering.
Both the Copy editing and formatting is done in the MS-word.
Editing of the text will involve grammar, spelling and punctuation. Formatting is related to the general layout of the text you are editing. It will include line spacing, paragraph alignment, and setting up paragraphs and sub-paragraphs, possibly in a modified outline form. Before you begin editing and formating, you should survey the entire document to determine how it should be formatted. Once I've done the formatting, then I'll go back and do the editing.
