If depth of structural element is limited, shear strength of structural elements can be increased by following ways.
1) By using steel of higher strength
2) By using concrete of higher strength
3) By increasing shear reinforcment e.g. reduce the spacing of strips near the support having maximum shear force in beam and columns. In slab and foundation, special reinforcement in zigzag shape near around the columns having maximum shear.
4) Provide shear joist or clomun drop to increse shear strenght of the element.
You can apply post tensioning system to control the excessive shear force
- Maximize the steel reinforcement .
you can control the shear force in this case by one of these ways:
- Designer can change the type of element from concrete to steel or PC or Prestressed or (Post-tensioned System)
- Maximize the width of the str. element with higher grade of concrete.
- Maximize the no. of stirrups .
- Maximize the steel reinforcement .
- use special additives on the concrete
-you can support this element by steel plates or similer on the shear areas especially if this element already poured>
Finally , the designer and the Site Engineer can take the best action according Project Specs and the detailed information .
Thanks,
By increasing the grade of concrete we an improve shear capacity of concrete. same for other material also
Reinforcment should do the job , however one can increase the dimensions (width) or using high quality materials (Fc' , fy) to control the shear.
Excessive force in shear and flexure can be controlled by increasing width of the element,by adopting higher grade of concrete,by increasing reinforcement to maximum limit.also we can go for post tensioned concrete or composite sections.
Agree with Imran Ahmed reply
1) increasing width of the beam (or) member
Mr. Imran, the shear strength for a members subject to shear and flexure is given by ACI as
so if depth is kept constant, the shear strength can be increase by increasing width (in case of beam) or by using high strength concrete.
