API (American Petroleum Institute)
The API classifications are different for petrol and diesel engines: -For petrol ,listings start with ‘S’ followed by another code to denote standard. ‘SN’ is the current top grade.- For diesel oils, the first letter is ‘C’ followed by another code to denote standard .’CI-4’ is the current top grade.This specified for engine oil , petrol engine oil and diesel engine oil.
S ,mean standard : SA, SB,SL,SM.
C ,mean commercial:CA,CB,CF-4,CS-4,CH-4,CI-4.
SL obtain 50%-60% of people requirements for their car engine.
Nowadays, SM, SN obtain the most people requirements for their car engine, because the car engine become smaller and more efficient so they require special package of additives .
