Assuming you are a total newbie, I suggest you DO NOT accept the first job you are offered!

The best thing you can do right away is thoroughly research advertising agencies.

For now, focus on established agencies such as Ogilvy, BBDO, McCann, and the like, which are owned by the so-called "Big Four" agency companies: WPP, Interpublic, Omnicom and Publicis.

Visit the group websites for links to the agencies that interest you the most.

Your choice should also be determined by the kind of copy you want to write (e.g. B2C or B2B, digital or real world, general or direct response, short or long . . . .).

Also, study books written by Victor Schwab, John Caples, David Ogilvy, Claude Hopkins, Robert (Bob) Bly, Joseph Sugarman, and others.

Be a "People Scientist"—be interested in people, what makes them click, what drives them, why they think/behave the way they do . . . .

And write, Write, WRITE! The best way to quickly learn the craft is to copy out successful copy by hand for 60 minutes every day.

Also subscribe to free newsletters of Copyblogger, American Writers & Artists Inc., Copy Hackers, Bly.com, etc.

Finally, don't let the agency culture blind you to the real world, the world that the consumer lives in.

Good luck!

Writing is an art.

Every human has their own thoughts and are free to express it in the form of written text.

More people are going to like what you write if you empathize with the mental frame of your audience.

Advertising agencies sell things.

You being the copywriter are the most powerful person there.

If you can be the voice of your product and put the correct amount of light on the USP of the product.

And make it even more enticing than it already is.

Voila!

You won the battle then and there.

Develop your expertise in understanding the consumer behavior involved. Another way is to stay up to date with your marketing skills, understand and try to think from the consumer's point of view, the offer that is being put forward by the product or service, how does it benefit the customer or client? Highlight on that matter. Improve Negotiation skills, and test your call-to-action capabilities. Compare and test whether your copywritten script enables a consumer on the other end to trust you and believe what the product or service has been offered gives a 100 percent satisfaction and generates towards a sale or  an affirmation to close the deal.
