When I'm in the role of creative director only really great designer can impress me. His social skills and emotional intelligence are, according to my opinion secondary but not irrelevant. In the matter of fact, his team fitting in is one of my duties. I have to  be a skillful organiser able to reconcile all character differences between my associates. So, a lack or shortage of soft skills are fixable imperfections and I have already managed not once to handle similar situations. Assessment of the other people is very tricky field and anyone with such task must be very deliberate person. Creative director must be able to motivate talented people to work with him and never to discriminate anyone on any ground. Finally, what makes sucessfull creative director is not only his strategic ability but also bringing a sense of common purpose into a team and natural authority which makes him able to reduce potential stubbornness or vanity.

I wouldn't choose either, at least not with those criteria. If by "good" and "mediocre" you're referring to talent exclusive of tenure or experience, then those criteria are not enough for me to make a decision. Skills can be trained and learned. Talent can be honed or wasted by the right and wrong attitude. What I look for in hiring people is values, attitude, and problem solving skills. In this day and age, we have all the tools we need to solve any problem--it's just not spoon-fed to us as use this tool to solve this problem. Hence, with the right attitude and the proper outlook in career (and life), any one can maximise these tools to solve any problem. In the end, I'd rather have someone who's dumb but willing to learn than someone who's good but won't listen.=)

It depends on what I wish to create. As a creative person, anything is resource. So, my answer is it depends.

By all means and at all times I will go with the team player. In-house training would bridge the expertise gab in some time. But on the other hand, personal skills are beyond reclaim.

Mostly I will select who's average but versatile soft skill sets. In this way we can face most challenging projects.

The question is what is more important for the job, graphic design or soft skills?

If you can answer this question then the choice is clear.

The point is: can I have a better candidate for the job with competences matching the job requirements or should I choose between two less suitable candidates?
