VMWare is good and leading the industry but HyperV is not behind the game specially with unique features in 2016. Also so much wrong information mentioned above. HyperV is a bare metal hypervisor. With core install it has very small attack surface. With cluster aware updating patches are done with ease. SCVMM to provide vcenter like management etc etc. Someone mentioned SAN compatibly above. HpyerV HCL is so vast it can even run on your PC and major SAN providers are supporting HyperV across the board. It just depends on what environment and workload you want to run. My experience says both and even xen for that matter are good options.

I faced alot of silly problems in Hyper V. Vmware is mature enough so makes it easier and faster to deploy.

Hyper-v and Vmware is more reliable then other hyper is pre builtin in Microsoft server but vmware is special it's has many advanced features and hyper-v is lighter than Vmware and best for cloud computing.

VMware vSphere is the Best Hypervisor which fit for any virtualization solution. In following point I explain why:

1- You can run any legacy OS. "Windows, SCO, Linux, Unix...etc"

2- Support 32 and 64 bit OS.

3- Hardware independent.

4- Can be integrated with Any Backup and Disaster recovery solution.

5- it can fit in your current infrastructure without modification or changes.

and there is Big list from High availability and management perspective which most of virtualization technology are away from it.

Both are good bare metal hypervisors, but is noticed that Vsphere has more feature. Now it´s will depend on what you really wants for Infrastructure.

Answer is : It Depends...

Both are best at their level. If your company afford to invest good amount for licenses, VMware is best option. Don't forget VMware is specialized in VMware where as Windows is providing virtualization solution for free along with their Server licenses...

I prefer and suggest to deploy Hyper-V in Development, Test, and UAT environment

If you have mission critical production environment and can't compromise with downtime, go with VMWare

Both is good in bare metal hyper visor. but it depend on the requirements of your company, if your company want to less their IT funds. It's more advisable to use Hyper V. but in performance and High availability wise i go with V sphere.

If you are looking for only server virtualization, Hyper-V is slightly ahead with VMware as comparing with license and feature. But to compare virtualization technologies, I would say VMware is far ahead as you could utilize more of NSX, SRM and desktop virtualization technologies. But at the sametime it also depends upon the utilization of company need at various level
