Bioconcrete or self healing concrete is concrete with added bacteria (bacillus bacteria) that react only in the appearance of cracks and use the water that enters the crack to produce limestone in order to fill the crack
Self Healing Concrete is a term that is used for cement-based materials that repair themselves after the material or structure gets damaged due to some sort of deterioration mechanism.
Self-healing of Concrete by Bacterial Mineral Precipitation is repairing cracks in concrete structures is a time consuming, costly but necessary business. TU Delft is researching how the self-healing capacity of concrete structures can be improved by using calcite-precipitating bacteria
n the future we may be surrounded by concrete structures, which are able to self-heal cracks in their structure, with special bacteria doing the job for us. Tiny cracks in concrete do not necessarily affect structural integrity in the short term, but they do allow water and other chemicals to seep into the structure, which may cause big problems over time. Self-healing concrete has dormant bacteria and a food source (starch) embedded in the concrete. When a crack appears in the concrete, water seeps in and reactivates the bacteria. After they awaken, the bacteria eat their packed lunch and then conveniently excrete calcite, which heals the crack. The bacteria can survive dormant in the material for 50 years.
can heal the damage of concrete automatically by the help of bacteria (bacillus bacteria) that discover.
i agree with eng / angelo his answer give conclusion about this type
I have only vague idea about it. What I understand is that this concrete can heal (repair) its own crack or defects because of the limestone producing-bacteria content with it. Sounds strange right? But its true.
in a self healing concrete calcite precipitating bacteria is added to the concrete mixture to fill cracks that might develop in the structure by bacterial reaction .
