How large of a group are you looking into managing?
Any time you have15 or more people it’s a good idea to assign others as immediate supervisors, I would say at least one supervisor for every7-9 people. Why7-9 people? Well that’s to have effective channels of communications between the supervisors and its team members. In a9 person team/office e.g the supervisor will have a total of36 channels of communications just within the one team. These immediate supervisors should in turn manage and oversee their team's work and process and report their progress of issues up to their manager (You).
By following this rule a single manager can manage a large group of about100. Within this group there should be no less than10 supervisors, to keep the7-9 ratio, and the manager will have to manage at least45 channels of communications. If you don’t use this type of structure a manager managing a group of100 would have to control and manage a total of4,950 channels of communications.
This type of structure works well, is not perfect by all means, but a good manager will be able to control a group this large. I only briefly touch the subject of organizational structuring, if you need more help feel free to contact me and I’ll be happy to help as much as possible.
Split the group to minigroups and allow a member to be a leader for sometime and change leadership as time runs "equal opportunities" for each member
