I'm trying to figure out how to consolidate spacing between words. How do I do this?
When you want to justify a text, it means you are working on spreading the text out over the width of the current container and shouldn't be used if you want equal widths between your words. Single spacing can refer to the lines within a paragraph and to the amount of space between paragraphs.
When random space is generating between words, you can set equal gap between words and change the setting of Justify. You have to justify the text in Center mode, which means that the text must reach both ends of the page, left and right.
- If the text-line is not exactly of the width of the printed page, the only way for Word to make both ends meet is by adding space in-between the words. Word in effect distributes the missing width pixels among the white-space in the line.
- To change the width of the space between the words you should change the font settings of the text: You can do this by selecting the text, do a right click and click Font, then go to the advanced tab where you can change the character spacing settings.
- The easiest way to change the line spacing for an entire document is to apply a Quick Style set that uses the spacing that you want. If you want to change the line spacing for a portion of the document, you can select the paragraphs and change their line spacing settings:
a- To change line spacing for an entire document or change paragraph spacing for an entire document – On the Home tab, in the Styles group, click Change Styles. Point to Style Set, and point to the various style sets. Using the live preview, notice how the line spacing changes from one style set to the next. For example, the Traditional and Word2003 style sets use single-spacing. The Manuscript style set uses double spacing. In addition to this, the Word2003 style set inserts no extra space between paragraphs and a small amount of space above headings. The Word2007 style set uses a double space between paragraphs and adds more space above headings.
b- To change the line spacing in a portion of the document - Select the paragraphs for which you want to change the line spacing. On the Home tab, in the Paragraph group, click Line Spacing, and do one of the following:
== Click the number of line spaces that you want. For example, click2.0, to double-space the selected paragraph. Click1.0 to single-space with the spacing that is used in earlier versions of Word. Click1.15 to single-space with the spacing that is used in Word2007.
== Click Line Spacing Options, and then select the options that you want under Spacing. If a line contains a large text character, graphic, or formula, Word increases the spacing for that line. To space all lines evenly within a paragraph, use exact spacing and specify an amount of space that is large enough to fit the largest character or graphic in the line. If items appear cut off, increase the amount of spacing.
c- As a conclusion of this:
- The easiest way to single-space an entire document or to format address paragraphs to eliminate extra space, is to apply the Word2003 Quick Style set. The Word2003 Quick Style set single-spaces lines with no extra space between paragraphs and no first-line indentation of paragraphs.
- Be aware that this spacing makes it difficult to distinguish one paragraph from another. One way to overcome this problem is to add a blank line between paragraphs.
- If you want no extra space between paragraphs, try using the Traditional Quick Style set, which indents the first line of each paragraph.
d- I totally agree what my colleague Muhammad Irfan Khan added in this section While using Notepad++, and opening a text file with it to edit that text by removing the unnecessary Blank and EOL, you will get a removal of excess line breaks from your text. To get rid of the excess blank spaces, you search in the Notepad++ for Replace to replace all. Repeat this till your text will end up without excess blank spaces. My comment on this purpose is: Just remember that if you do not copy the content from a Word document into notepad, your formatted text will be lost.
Word has a nice algorithm for this, and it's not at all random.
Dear Yaseen, your question is quite interesting and the answer is also very simple as your question.
First download Notepad++.
Secondly, Open your file with it and go to edit, blank operations, remove unnecessary blank and EOL. Your text will have its excess line breaks removed.
Third, now your text will only contain excess blank spaces which you can get rid of easily by doing the following in Notepad++: Search --> Replace. In the Find what box enter two blanks like " " (without quotes). In the Replace with box use a single blank " " (without quotes). Press Replace all.
- Repeat step3 a couple of times and your text will end up without excess blank spaces.
Hope you got good result using this method.
Thanks for your question.
