How safe is the " Mineral Water" ?

Hi everyone,

 

In continuation of answers by other experts, I would like to add following:

 

1. It definitely depends on the end use but also the company that is producing it.

For eg: let us consider Mineral water for drinking purpose.

Although most of the companies use Ozone as water disinfection. However, Ozone concentration level and contact time plays an important role rather than just installing an ozone generator for disinfection. IF bromide is not controlled at source, over dosing of Ozone may lead to bromate formation which is a carcinogen.

Thus, It depends on companies that follows strict quality measures. However quality non compliance is there with most of the big companies as well but the probability of non compliance is less in companies those follows strict ISO or HACCP etc procedures.

 

Similarly Mineral contents in mineral water should be check by third party periodically to ensure it contains mineral levels as per international standards for end use.

Depending on the concentration and quality of salts in it and for which purpose it will be used so we can judge if it save or not.

1 - For using it as potable water so minerals should have that concentration of different salts that match the WHO standards for potable water which is talks about less than 900 ppm of TDS and 200 ppm of Na, total hardness 500 ppm, 1500 µS/cm, ionic chloride 250 ppm, and sulfate 250 ppm, in addition to that, this water should be Nitrate free or up to 30 ppm and Nitrite free and of course should be free of heavy metals and other types of pollutants to considered to be save   so if the concentration of salts is match these standards so we can say it is save for potable use. 

Regarding the use of mineral water for irrigation so it important to take in consideration the following points:

- Qualitative and quantitative content of salts in water.

- Type of cultivated plants 

- Soil type and properties.

Recent researchs show that mineral water factories should also sanitise the mineral water. This leads to elimination of sodium and other essential minerals needed for the human body. Alas depending on factory mineral water is not an absolute solution. Yet dependence of salty areas to the imported mineral waters exists
