Sometimes when you go to an interview, employers check your social media accounts afterwards. Why do you think they do that? And also, why is it important to have accounts on several social media platforms?
Access to social media accounts give us opportunity to learn more about somebody - their interests, what they do in their free time, with what type of people they like to spend time with, which books they read, do they spend time on checking-out trends in their respective business areas or perhaps like to travel and spend time in the gym?
Different social media platforms serve for different reasons (or at least they should!). On the one hand you have LinkedIn to present your professional experience and skill sets, then comes Facebook which is more open-minded and place to share information about your personal life and connect with friends. On the other hand we have Instagram and Snapchat to share photos of everyday life or even to promote business. What we're seeing nowdays is that people are starting to use some of the above mentioned social media profile for wrong purposes - LinkedIn is overwhelmed with photos from summer holidays, parties etc, while Facebook became a perfect place to share political opinion.
All this information can help us to better understand our potential new colleagues. The stress is on "help us" cause building impression about somebody solely on what's presented on their social media profiles could be a two-edged sword. Perhaps somebody likes to makes jokes and goes around Facebook sharing dozen of 9gag videos. Or maybe the person is too shy to share any photo, but still likes to hang out and spend quality time with friends.
To sum up, social media profiles can definitely help us in learning more about our candidates. This is why I'd like to take a look on LinkedIn and/or Facebook/Instagram profiles once I short-list candidates. This helps me to get basic picture of someone's personality, but certainly appreciate personal touch and conversation, as well as suitable assessments results when and if needed.
I always tell my students to be mindful of what is posted on social media as prospective employers will want to check your online profiles for suitability. I suggest they perform regular social media audits of their various accounts too.
For cross-checking the information and to know about the candidate's substance.
You don't NEED to have several social media accts. As a matter of fact you don't have to have any.
Employers look you up to pick up what kind of person you really are. Everyone can look great on paper and in interview, but at the end of the day your personality, your attitudes, who you ARE, will determine what kind of job you can and will do.
