A sales and marketing department performs market research, develops promotional plans and manages personal selling strategies. Often, marketing is a separate function from sales. Marketing does the research and strategic communication planning, while the sales department implements selling-specific promotional strategies.
Research is used to identify the preferences of target markets. Data is used to prepare and revise solutions. Advertising, PR and selling are all used to communicate the benefits of a solution to customers. Marketing prepares collateral materials used by sales staff to persuade prospects to buy. With established customers, the marketing and sales functions work to maintain long-term loyal relationships.

The fact is that both complements each other . Marketing is the process of identifying, anticipating and then meeting the needs and requirements of consumers in order to make a profit. In contrast, selling involves persuading customers that your products or services provide the benefits that they are looking for.
Marketing tries to understand the customer as a generic group/ segment or persona in order to create generic value propositions and 'mass' awareness.
Sales is short-term focused. Yes they want to build long-term relationships, but they also want to close the next deal, and may be inclined to take on clients that aren't "ideal"for your business.
