It's not important, but it can be very useful.
SWOT (Strengths, Weaknesses, Opportunities and Threats) is a mechanism for examining the present situation. There are of course many other ways of doing it, but this one is simple, easy to implement and has stood the test of time. It is not comprehensive, but it is a good starting point.
It is useful because it addresses four useful questions, two about the present and two about the future.
What are we good at? What are we bad at?
What could go wrong soon? What could go right soon?
This is a good way of establishing where you are, where you might want to go, and what might interfere with your plan.
The underlying principle - of thinking, honestly, about where you are and where you want to be, is very important.
